If you read Part 1 of this blog, you already know that you are fully connected to a Fullistic® acting community that is yours and yours alone. If you engage it consciously, it can bring you acting opportunities from people and places you never even imagined. It can help you make connections that are satisfying both for you and others. It can provide you with the safe, easy feeling that you’re in the right place at the right time, doing just the right project. It can help you become a powerful presence that can boost others’ careers as well as your own. You can do this by consciously using the Three Tensions™.
So let’s make that start to happen.
If you’ve ever been told to make a vision board or think positively, you likely know that neither is enough to deliver what would truly be satisfying. The reason for this is simple: as soon as you set up something you want, you create the energetic state of wanting, which just keeps you away from the thing you hope to experience. Even if you feel certain you can have it, you still have created a time gap between now and when you eventually do. Or you exhaust yourself mentally and emotionally by trying to stay positive when doubts creep in.
There’s an easier way: just consciously engage the “Three Tensions”:
When these three are aligned, you open the floodgates. Everything seems to flow more easily. Opportunities come out of nowhere. You never worry about losing one, because you know there’s one that’s a better fit for you. You find evidence and examples everywhere that help bring your dreams to life. Exciting as this is, you actually find yourself feeling more peaceful and relaxed, as if it was meant to be this way all along.
The first of the Three Tensions is Intention. You start by intending how you want to feel. Imagine yourself on your best day, doing what you do so well that it feels like breathing—you’re not even aware of it. You’re where you ought to be. You’re with “your peeps” and they’re loving what you’ve brought to the table, stage or set. You’re not self-conscious at all because you don’t have to be. You’re not pretending or forcing anything; you’re just being you.
What one single word, phrase, song, dance, aroma or image describes this for you?
That’s your intention. Energetically, intention is NOT a goal, like winning a particular part. The reason why is simple: the energetic conditions around that part may not match your intention. Even if the role sounds great, it’s possible that some of the people or conditions involved with it would compromise your ideal state.
Also, when you set your intention without having a specific goal, it opens up a world of possibilities that allow it to come to you in multiple ways. It’s like saying you only want vanilla ice cream until you discover that chocolate is more delicious.
To set your intention, identify an ideal feeling you want to have, not a particular thing. This literally and figuratively sets the “tone” for your Fullistic acting community, like giving it a unique URL or IP address. The only difference is that it does not reside on something electronic, and it can’t be hacked by anyone. It is completely secure and totally unique to you alone because it reflects you, and only your individual combination of thoughts, feelings and experiences.
Let yourself mentally and emotionally drift to your best acting moment, when everything was flowing perfectly and everything worked. If that hasn’t happened yet, think about the last time you felt relaxed and peaceful, on or off a set or stage. If that has never happened, then go find someone or something that represents peace and happiness to you, and hang out with them until you pick up their vibe. Children, pets and nature can often help with this, but so can music or reading about someone who has it.
Important note: fame and fortune are goals, not intentions. Focus not on what you want to get, but all you have to give in service to your craft. If you intend to be happy, peaceful, free, radiant, relaxed, joyful, generous, playful, expansive, kind, clear, responsible, honest, present, healthy or any other state that supports life and a positive connection to others, you will likely surpass any goal you can imagine, since we humans can only imagine variations of what we’ve already experienced or have seen others experience.
And here’s another clue: Intention is always tied to letting yourself love and be loved.
The second of the Three Tensions is Attention. Just begin noticing everything in your experience—physical, mental, emotional—that fits with your intention. Ignore the rest as much as you can.
This sounds easy, but opening your attention to what feels right and good is actually the most challenging part of building your Fullistic acting community. This is because the vast majority of our thoughts are negative. Scientists say we have been 50,000 and 80,000 thoughts every day, and up to 80% of these are negative. The negativity comes from three things:
Unless you want to live without your survival instinct, your friends or your work, you need your negatives. But here’s a surprise: they’re exactly what you need to clarify what you do want, so they can help you quickly identify and align the Three Tensions. Simply do a 180-degree flip on a good, clear negative to identify clearly what you DO want instead.
If your attention contradicts your intention, it’s like opening your door to guests and then slamming it in their face. You want to let your acting community in, and paying attention to it is a critical step. So if, once you set your intention, you find your attention drifting to what isn’t happening, stop. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Reconnect with the feeling of your intention, and then open your eyes. You’ll likely see or hear something that is exactly what you needed or wanted right now. Remember: your community may not appear physically in this moment; you may hear a song or phrase in your head or get some other higher vibrational message. Follow where it leads you.
The last of the Three Tensions is No Tension. This is where the delightful surprises show up.
“No tension” is the part of your community where so-called miracles come from, even if that “miracle” is as small as finding the script your dog buried in the backyard when you fell asleep after you got home from your third job.
There are several ways to connect to the “No Tension” part of your Fullistic acting community. The first way is very simple: when you are stressed, simply distract yourself. Taking your mind off what is bothering you automatically releases the mind/body bond around the issue that’s stressing you out. You can use a tool like my book Feathers: 50 Things You Can Do in 50 Seconds or Less to Lighten Up and Set Yourself Free. Just open it at random to take your mind off what you don’t want, and what you do want can then show up. Or you can use another book or resource of your choosing. Again, all you have to do is take your mind off what is bothering you so you’re not feeding it energy. You’ll likely feel a release of tension in your physical body; that’s how you know you’ve successfully connected to “No tension.”
A second way is to go into a deeply meditative state where you are able to disconnect from your thoughts. Again, simply remember that we feel every thought we think, so if you can simply observe your thoughts unemotionally or let them go entirely, you will feel the tension disappear from your body.
Other ways include exercise, dancing, getting out in nature, cooking a meal—again, anything that takes your mind off the problem and results in a feeling of release and peace. If you find this is still difficult, you can consider resources like The Sedona Method or The Work, which are both brilliantly designed to help you release the energetic tension of a mind trap.
The best thing about connecting to the No Tension part of your Fullistic®️ acting community is that you will likely be delighted with what happens. Often, you will get the answer to a stuck problem or an opportunity you never expected, usually within days.
